Ute Lemper musicalizes Bukowski
In 1986, Timemagazine called poet Charles Bukowski a “laureate of American lowlife,” who provided his reading public “Henry Miller–ish paeans to booze and broads.” Exciting as that may sound, Bukowski also gave page space to mice and L.A. traffic. All of it is fair game for cabaret star Ute Lemper, who, with her band, interprets 28 poems from three of Bukowski’s books. In The Bukowski Project, Lemper sings the poems word-for-word, setting them to original music she calls “urban, sometimes introverted and melodic, sometimes raging and wild.” Tonight marks the project’s New York premiere, with a run through Sunday.
