It’s becoming increasingly difficult to reach blindly forth into the pop cultural stratosphere and pluck out a proper analogy for what author Rick Moody does. But here goes: If Thomas Pynchon were to produce a particularly high-concept episode of Mystery Science Theater while hopped up on acid, it might sound something like Moody’s latest, The Four Fingers of Death, which concerns a hack freelance writer who’s been assigned to write the novelization of the atrocious 1963 drive-in flick The Crawling Hand. At Bryant Park’s Word for Word series, Moody, who is also musically inclined, will share excerpts from the book before performing a set alongside host and fellow folkie Wesley Stace.
