GOVERNORS ISLAND GETS CLASSY

Kick up your heels Great Gatsby–style

Gents, throw on your dapper rags. Ladies, grab your vintage minidress and a big ol’ sunhat. It’s time to cut a rug at the fifth Bi-Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. This celebration of America’s most glamorous decade, the “Roaring ’20s,” features jazz performances by Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra and special guests Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society. If you can’t find the rhythm, swing dancing pro Roddy Caravella will teach you how to do the Charleston. For the non-dancers, there will also be a 1920s motorcar exhibit. Take a spin around the island in an old-school buggy while sipping on Prohibition-era cocktails. Vintage clothing dealers will be on site to provide flapper-ware and sport suits should you come under-dressed. Other highlights include the Parade of Hats, a barbecue lunch, and a pie recipe contest.
