Ryan Keberle Double Quartet
The trombonist took a blustery yet beautiful solo with Darcy James Argue's brood in Newport a few weeks ago. Ditto for a lyrical romp he provided a few weeks prior as part of Maria Schneider's Midtown crew. The dude's an inventive section player. But the new Heavy Dreaming makes a strong case for Keberle being his own man as well. Dramatic writing, dulcet grooves, and plenty of innuendo-- there often seems to be more going on than meets the ear in his intricate music. The museum's splendid auditorium should render all the nuances.
