In the special features on the Saturday Night Fever DVD, John Travolta said the one thing that really irked him about making the iconic 1977 film about disco and drugs happened in the first minutes of the film. Here we see Tony Manero doing his infamous strut on a Brooklyn street, carrying a can of paint to the sounds of the Bee Gees, when he holds up his boot to compare it to another in the window display of a shoe store. The trouble is, that really isn’t Travolta’s foot. The actor complained he would never have wiggled it in that manner. Might you call Travolta a perfectionist? Sure. And thank goodness, too, because it was certainly his attention to detail, his daily three hours of training under the disco ball, that made Saturday Night Fever, which plays tonight in Central Park, one of the greatest films of the ’70s. So, who’s going to be the first to get up and dance?
