Al Green

Nearly 35 years after "Call Me" and "Here I Am," Green's 2008 comeback album Lay It Down turned him into classic soul's ultimate survivor, thanks in part to assists from Questlove and Daptone. His '70s-era catalog, with his baritone always straining to profess his love atop funky bass and horn arrangements. . . good God. However, as he is an ordained minister with a serious gospel phase under his belt, he probably doesn't like to see the Lord's name taken in vain--sorry, Reverend.
