AND THE BEAT GOES ON

The annual HOWL! Festival returns

We have not, to our knowledge, seen the best minds of our generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked. But perhaps that will all change when the eighth annual HOWL! Festivaldebuts. This downtown celebration attracts nearly 100,000 visitors as it attempts to “lionize, preserve, and advance the art, history, culture, and counterculture unique to the East Village and Lower East Side.” This year’s lineup includes a group reading of Allen Ginsburg’s famed poem, butoh dance, experimental music, lively circus, short film, and “The Bitches Guide to the Lower East Side.” The theater offerings include kiddie musicals, an all-male Oedipus Rex, new work from Penny Arcade, and, tonight, a revival of Marc Blitzstein’s scandalous song play The Cradle Will Rockabout Depression-era politics.
