Austria's Fennesz has been exploring the gentler side of noise music since he formed Maische back in the '80s, but he really came into his own when techno prompted him to pick up a laptop to use with that guitar. 2001's shimmering Endless Summer might be his meisterwerk, but his nuanced albums always manage to deliver something a little different, whether solo or in collaboration with, say, David Sylvian, Sparklehorse, Ryuichi Sakamoto, or Mike Patton.
