Lauded upon its 2008 release in France, where they're based, the duo of Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy--the Do--have garnered a good bit of Web and college radio notice with A Mouthful, their multipurpose pop debut. With parts of it indie pop gone to shambles, parts of it enriched with heady and unexpected production tweaks, and parts of it held aloft by Merilahti's captivating wisp of a voice, the whole bit succeeds mightily on what is the greatest commodity in the fickle and fleeting world of contemporary jam-making: from the hyper fife 'n' drums in "Playground Hustle" to the foot tap and bristly stir of "Bridge is Broken," the Do matches brevity with unlikely melody. Hence, A Mouthful is easily transferable to the attention-deficit digital age. Not bad for a band who often sound like they made this stuff on toy instruments rebuilt with circuit boards and whimsy tinged with gloom. With the Paper Raincoat and Aislyn.
