Rob Pruitt gets inspiration from . . . the Amish?
Over the past two decades, contemporary artist/scenemaker/painter of glittery pandas Rob Pruitt has been known to create a few scandals (see: his infamous Cocaine Buffet [1998], a long mirror on the floor with a line of coke down the center). For this major exhibition of new works titled “Pattern and Degradation,” he takes inspiration from the Amish tradition of Rumspringa, in which Amish adolescents are allowed to run wild in the contemporary world before committing to the staid Amish lifestyle. Pruitt, who certainly knows a thing or two about rebellion, has made Amish quilts (he spray-painted them, natch) and a series of “schizophrenic” composite self-portrait paintings to capture his “Permanent Rumspringa,” among other works. Opening party is at 6 p.m. on September 11.
