Mystery Jets touch down at Mercury Lounge

This English outfit’s previous records seemed to slot Mystery Jets alongside the Beta Band, the Coral, and a Band of Bees, all quirky U.K. indie-rock acts with ramshackle kitchen-sink attacks. But Serotonin, the Jets’ new one (and their first for Rough Trade), is a rather different beast—think slick, tuneful synth-rock à la Duran Duran or Phoenix. They still leave room in the arrangements for the occasional touch of quirk; “Flash a Hungry Smile,” for instance, contains both whistling and what sounds like a chorus of kazoos. Now, though, the goofy shit feels like a layer of detail, rather than the whole shebang.
