Our Beloved Month of August

Dir. Miguel Gomes (2008). Everything in this laid-back, tricky second feature by Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes is a performance, including the movie itself. The cast is largely mainly amateur musicians; taking a leaf from Nashville, Gomes uses their numbers as a form of Grand Old Opry, but unlike the perfs in the Altman opus, these are devoid of irony with the performers played by the equivalent of real hillbillies… perhaps. It’s impossible to decide whether life imposed itself upon Gomes’ scenario or vice versa.
