THIS AMERICAN LIFE

Take a good listen to the U.S.

What does America sound like? For his latest experimental work Border Towns, composer and co-director Nick Brooke of the production company the Cabinet, traveled to remote towns throughout the country to find out. What he came up with is what he calls a “Whitman’s Sampler” of sound and movement, including salsa, minstrelsy plantation songs, mariachi, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, country western tunes, Cantonese opera, Methodist camp-revival meetings, air-guitar contests, Shaker tunes, buck-grunting calls, Steven Tyler microphone technique, and Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring. Phew! The piece, co-directed by Jenny Rohn, features seven performers who bring the sounds to life.
Mondays-Sundays, 9 p.m. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Sept. 18, 2010
