It was slightly disingenuous to have Sleepy Doug Shaw's new recording project, Highlife, open up for South Africa's BLK JKS last year. Whereas that band was aiming for U2/Radiohead rock loftiness, Shaw was trying to return to the motherland via ebullient rhythms and chiming guitar lines. His bright new Best Bless EP aims for a more vague continent, if the folky mash of "Tuareg Dancehall" is any indication. Sierra Leone's Janka Nabay deploys his native bubu music at lightning fast yet gentle speeds to mesmeric effect. Ali Kamiya Dit Ba "Ali Baba," hailing from West Africa, draws from American blues and Jamaican dub, and has found love in California, of all places. With Lichens.
