Some Latinos in New York might not think they have deep roots in the city’s history. But the New-York Historical Society and El Museo del Barrio aim to show how far back they indeed go in this town in Nueva York (1613–1945), an extensive exhibition that explores New York’s long involvement with Spain and Latin America via hands-on interactive displays, listening stations, videos, and about 200 rare and historic maps, letters, broadsides, paintings, and drawings. The exhibition timeline begins from the founding of New Amsterdam in the 1600s as a foothold against the Spanish empire to the present day. Both institutions share with the public their collection that shows how Latinos were a huge part of New York’s commerce, manufacturing, transportation, communications, entertainment, and arts.
