STRING SEMINAR

The beauty of classical bows and plucks

The lute, a plucked string instrument popular during the Renaissance through the late Baroque eras, and its bow-wielding cousin, the fiddle, which established prominence in 10th-century Europe (descended from the earlier Byzantine lira), enjoy due contemporary attention tonight in A Celebration of Lutes & Fiddles From Bulgaria, Ukraine, Crimea & Turkey. This season’s inaugural concert for the tremendous World Music Institute series, features Uzbeki violinist Nariman Asanov, yayli tanbur (Turkish bowed lute) player Beth Bahia Cohen, authentic Pontic Greek lyra artist Christos Tiktapanidis, and more. It will be an enjoyable and educational convergence in a more than fitting venue.
Sat., Sept. 18, 3 p.m., 2010
