It's hard to make a saxophone twang, but reeds can definitely be bent in a way that'll make a few tears fall into a few beers. This happens when tenor player Bryan Murray rolls through Merle's "Silver Wings" on the new Pretend It's the End of the World. Like Eugene Chadbourne before him, he imbues his unholy alliance of jazz and country with both humor and clamor (thesis: polyphony was born in Bakersfield). Able associates include horn player Jon Irabagon and bassist Moppa Elliot, and when they get to that Bob Wills nugget, someone please holler, "Shoot low Sheriff, he’s riding a Shetland!"
