Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara's colorful images of little children and animals have created what is known as the "Nara phenomenon," a connection to Japanese youth that's so powerful even the hikikomori, disturbed young people who lock themselves in their bedrooms, have been known to come out for his exhibits. Now, we can see what all the excitement is about firsthand at Nobody's Fool, the first major New York exhibition of the Japanese artist, which features more than 100 works from his early career in the 1980s to his most recent paintings, drawings, sculptures, and large-scale installations. Tonight, the Japanese trio Shonen Knife, whose 1998 album, Happy Hour, Nara designed the cover for, give a special performance at Asia Society.
