Japan's Envy were in a prime position to be the new leaders of post-metal Explosions in the Dirt since Isis broke up--what with their penchant for cinematic synth swirls, 15-minute songs, and huge crescendos that build and build and explode and then build again. But they've scaled back the epic and upped the melodies for fifth album Recitation, creating a perfect balance of swoon and croon, mosh and cuddle, floorpunch and skygaze.
