SON OF A GUN

The Vaselines are back together

Last month, these Scottish indie-pop pioneers released their first album in two decades, Sex With an X, and if it’s not quite up to the standards of the duo’s delightful late-’80s stuff—well, it doesn’t really have to be: Rounded out by admirers from Belle and Sebastian and the 1990s, the Vaselines are still touring with a beyond-solid songbook that includes such creepy-cutesy gems as “Son of a Gun” and “Molly’s Lips,” both of which Nirvana famously covered, thereby ensuring Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee’s status as post-punk legends. Do insist that they play the new album’s “Overweight but Over You,” whose charms you don’t need me to unpack. With local anti-folk crank Jeffrey Lewis.
