If you haven’t yet caught Fela! on Broadway (or perhaps even if you have), here’s a chance to sample the hit show’s music gratis, as St. Ann’s Warehouse opens its new season with a free performance by one of the musical’s stars, Sahr Ngaujah, and its live band, which includes members of Brooklyn’s dependably funky Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Needless to say, with its epic slow-boil grooves, the music of Fela Kuti is perhaps not a dish best served in sample-size form. Yet the prospect of converting the Afrobeat-unaware seems to have energized the crew at the Eugene O’Neill; expect nothing less here.
