Trouble in Paradise

Dir. Ernst Lubitsch (1932). No Hollywood movie is more insouciantly amoral: Lubitsch’s urbane masterpiece concerns a swank pair of thieves (Herbert Marshall and Miriam Hopkins) and a wealthy widow (Kay Francis) who doesn’t mind being burgled—at least by Marshall. The deco sets were once the essence of modernity as was the worldly attitude. Trouble in Paradise was Lubitsch’s first non-musical talking picture; cut to sprightly incidental music and paced by playful spoken rhythms, it dances to its own tune.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 1:30 p.m. Starts: Sept. 29. Continues through Oct. 1, 2010
