Photographer Lyle Owerko was window shopping in Tokyo in 2001 (the same year his iconic 9/11 photograph made the cover of Time) when he came across a mint late-70s JVC-Victor boombox at an outdoor market. Since he was already a collector (and music-video director for artists including Rufus Wainwright and American Hi-Fi), it was only natural that this discovery motivated him to look for rarer and more obscure models. Now you can check out his findings at The Boombox, a new photo series of his vintage boomboxes at Clic Gallery. The exhibition corresponds with the release of Owerkos photo book, The Boombox Project, which includes an introduction by Spike Lee and commentary on the culture by Fab 5 Freddy, Kool Moe Dee, and Ad-Rock, among others. Mark your calendars for the book-release party on October 14. Owerko will sign copies and, given the names involved, who knows who might be in the house? Either way, you know the music will most definitely be loud.
