Rhys Chatham collaborates with video artist Angie Eng
For two days at the Kitchen, minimalist legend Rhys Chatham finds an outlet markedly more minimal than his blistering 400-guitar armies. For the premiere of his “multimedia concert” Echodes, the microtonal dronemaster teams with video artist Angie Eng, spasmodic local freak-jazz octopus Kevin Shea, and Jesus Lizard bass bludgeoner David Wm. Sims. Fueled by the extended playing techniques of free-jazzers like Don Cherry and Chatham’s 20th-century contemporaries like Tony Conrad, Chatham vows to drone (on guitar and trumpet) and distort (on stompboxes and doodads), as Eng delivers a flickering display of projections and videos. It will be more mellow than the sweaty, muscular rock bands he’s been bringing around, and certainly more cozy than the 200 guitars that descended on Damrosch Park in 2009 (a recording will be released this month on Nonesuch)—so be sure to catch this titan in a rare moment of intimacy.
