LO-FI IN THE BIG TIME

Three different rock bands in one unique gig

When you really ponder it (and, come on, it’s October—what else is there to ponder?), this strange yet wonderful Madison Square Garden lineup satisfies every part of the psyche. Wavves, spazzy San Diegan Nathan Williams’s lo-fi outfit, is pure surf-punk thrash that fully abets the pleasure principle (the id). Dirty Projectors, the freewheeling experimental composers and Björk collaborators, are far-sighted, nuanced intellectuals in full grasp of the ego. And Phoenix, those French barnstormers, aimed for perfection with last year’s wonderfully giddy, infectious Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and—guess what?—they get it (thanks, superego).
