RAPPER’S DELIGHT

CMJ kicks off with a hip-hop reunion

Out of the five days and hundreds of shows occurring at this year’s CMJbooze-’n’-schmooze/hype-’n’-type “Music” Marathon, our favorite is this all-star reunion of the indie hip-hop class of 1999. Don’t know if this says more about our age, the ephemeral nature of indie, or our total indifference to who exactly is “this year’s Surfer Blood,” but we’ll take this over TweetPic-ing pictures of Dom any day. Courtesy of the tireless, undying Duck Down label and the well-connected team at Blacksmith, this jam-packed hip-hop show will feature almost the entire Boot Camp Clik (Buckshot, Smif-N-Wessun, Sean Price, and Heltah Skeltah bandmate Rock) on the same bill as the mighty Pharoahe Monch; the ever-retiring and ever-engaging Jean Grae, old-school beatmaking legend Pete Rock and new-school beatmaking legend 9th Wonder. The rest of the roster is less famous but equally impressive: nimble-tongued New York insularity artist Skyzoo and producer !llmind, Liks-styled party rockers Strong Arm Steady, Duck Down beat purists Marco Polo with Torae and Ruste Juxx, and newbie electro-weirdos Team Facelift.
