The Leopard

Dir. Luchino Visconti (1963). There are movies that invent a genre to which their successors can only aspire. Jean Renoir’s Rules of the Game is one. Visconti’s masterpiece is another. The most mutilated movie of 1963, this sumptuous historical drama—more pageant than action film, less reconstruction than reverie—has an artistry only comprehensible in the uncut Italian version.
