Touchez Pas Au Grisbi

Dir. Jacques Becker (1954). Long overdue for a Hollywood remake, Jacques Becker’s humanistic evocation of a Montmartre criminal demi-monde provided a new model for the French crime film as well as Popular Front icon Jean Gabin’s post World War II comeback. Other attractions include a young, pony-tail switching Jeanne Moreau but Gabin is the resident object d’art. The movie hits its stride in the last 40 minutes when this old school gangster finally goes to war—old school style.
