After being left alone, you make your way through a dimly lit century-old playhouse. Lacy bustles rustle past, gears click, clocks whir, wraiths and phantoms roam the halls, and haunting images of a re-envisioned Victorian past send chills up your spine. Steampunk, for those unfamiliar with it, is Victorian-era science fiction, and this year's Steampunk Haunted House brings together the time period's elegance and the chills of a traditional scare house (sans the cop-outs of blood and gore used by most). Hosted at the Abrons Arts Center and created by Bessie Award–winning artists, the combination art installation and haunted house is a lavish delight for the senses. If the experience inspires you to embrace the steam-powered, Steampunk Day is taking place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the DUMBO Loft, and offers excellent shopping, a fashion show, and a literary corner.
