Last week, we waxed rhapsodic about Mayer Hawthorne, the Detroit troubadour of sweet Curtis Mayfield melodies and brassy pop giddiness. Well, as CMJ rolls apace this week, it brings Mayfield's main contender for the retro-soul title: Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, a dapper Massachusetts soul acolyte of similar Motown throwbacks. His Capitol Records debut, Come and Get It!, remains one of this year's most exciting discs, a jolly thumb-through of classic Stax elevated by his young enthusiasm and worldly croon. "Help Me" and "You Can Run On" are as thrilling refrains as this soul's ever heard; Reed's live show is said to deliver 'em home even better. See you there.
