J'accuse

Dir. Abel Gance (1919). Abel Gance, D.W. Griffith’s only rival as a narrative formalist and purveyor of epic emotion, made an international sensation with this nearly three-hour account of a romantic triangle put through hell during World War I. Released even before the blood had dried, J’accuse is alternately clumsy and titanic—the climactic scene in which the dead return from their mass grave is the origin of zombie horror.
