Every year, at the same time as CMJ, a different type of music enthusiast gathers at a Newark motel to celebrate a long-dead art form. The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention (FOTR) draws a crowd of some 300 to 400 people to see re-created radio plays, panels, and music as well as concession booths and dealers hawking related memorabilia. Some of the participants have included cable news leftie Keith Olbermann, talk-show immortal Joe Franklin (hosting a panel this time), and, up until the time of his passing, Soupy Sales. If you think this stuff is too old and corny for you, you're wrong. It's a piece of history and the tune-in-next-time drama and vaudeville, lowbrow humor is still a hoot.
