When you hear “Bollywood,” do you imagine long song-and-dance numbers, elaborate traditional costumes, and corny melodrama about arranged marriages? Focusing on a new wave of filmmakers from South Asia, the seventh annual South Asian International Film Festival highlights how much cinema has changed in recent years. Take, for instance, Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots, the festival’s opening-night selection about an English-born woman who goes in search of her father in Mumbai and ends up working in a seedy massage parlor. Other highlights include the coming-of-age drama Gandu; Harud, which explores the ongoing political crisis in Kashmir; and The Untitled Kartik Krishnan Project, India’s first mumblecore film. Starts October 27, through November 2, SVA Theater, 333 West 23rd Street, for information on admission and times go to saiff.org
Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2010
