NYC NOISE

Organized by Columbia University art professor Branden W. Joseph and post-rocking ex-Gastr del Sol dude David Grubbs, Theoretical Music: No Wave, New Music, and the New York Art Scene, 1978–1983 is a three-night multimedia event that purports to “examine the intersections as well as the failed encounters of art, music, and cinema in downtown Manhattan from 1978–1983.” On the docket are a screening of James Nares’s Rome ’78(starring James Chance, Lydia Lunch, John Lurie, and other No Wave luminaries), a pair of panel discussions featuring writers Ned Sublette and Byron Coley and rockers Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) (November 4 at 5:30), and a concert by New York’s recently revived Ut and the young Brooklyn duo Talk Normal (November 5 at 8).
