MIX NYC, the New York Queer Experimental Film Festival, takes a decidedly meta approach to programming: Almost every night’s lineup includes at least one live performance, and at least one film about (or documenting) live performance. The live-live stuff includes Daniel Pills abiding Soviet rule, Birgitta Hosea as an animated doll lip-synching dialogue from Sunset Boulevard, and Roving Party Machine’s messy, destructive take on Food Network Challenge. The fest opens Tuesday by merging the two: a screening of clips of upcoming MIX works shown with live musical accompaniment. On the film side of things, topics in the coming week cover everything from relationships and desire to torture and zombies—that’s right, legendary queercore filmmaker Bruce La Bruce closes the festival with his latest take on the undead, LA Zombie.
