INSIDE, OUTSIDE

Life in a small town always looks better in a photograph

More About

Journals & Notebooks marks artist Collier Schorr’s tenth solo show at 303 Gallery—and, fittingly, much of the work that she has exhibited for the past 20 years is due to the gallery itself. “I was really interested in German photography, because at the time, Lisa Spellman, the owner of 303 Gallery, was showing a lot of it,” Schorr told Artforum. Schwäbish Gmünd is the town she moved to from New York and from which she has taken inspiration for a series of shows. In this exhibition, she continues to map her own history within this town, both imagined and inherited, and explores through photographs, video, and sound the interwoven stories of a small town observed by an outsider.
