KNOCK OUT

The 30th anniversary of Raging Bull

“They called me an animal, I’m not an animal!” sobs Robert De Niro as the boxer Jake La Motta in 1980’s Raging Bull. De Niro won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor for his riveting portrayal of the former middleweight champion, nicknamed the “Bronx Bull.” The actor trained for a year with La Motta himself to get in shape for the role and, during a four-month hiatus, packed on about 60 pounds to play La Motta later in his life. Now, catch all the bloody, bone-crunching action as it was meant to be seen when Film Forum celebrates the movie’s 30th anniversary with a fresh new 35mm print. Cathy Moriarty stars as La Motta’s young wife and Joe Pesci as La Motta’s brother, Joey—watch for the scene when you see Pesci groan after De Niro punches him in the side and accidentally breaks Pesci’s rib.
