LA BELLE VIE

Exploring the legacy of Roland Barthes

If you’re a fan of Francophone culture, philosophy, or cultural critique, or are perhaps just seeking an escape from the air-headed Snookis and Situations of the world, the n+1 symposium on Roland Barthes: Reflection on the Public, Private Intellectual should be a refreshing foray into deeper subject matter. Founding editor of n+1Marco Roth joins Richard Howard, noted Pulitzer Prize winner, in a discussion of the famous French literary theorist, philosopher, critic, and semiotician. The two will tackle “personalizing the intellectual” and “intellectualizing the personal” in today’s society, as well as Howard’s longtime friendship and working relationship with Barthes. Their discourse coincides with the posthumous publication of Mourning Diary(translated by Howard), a compilation of the many notes Barthes left behind after his mother’s passing. The new book, released almost 30 years after his death, sheds new light on the philosopher’s personal grief and self-reflection.
