THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

Paul Weller plays the Apollo

As Paul Weller (a/k/a “the Modfather”) hits AARP age and becomes an elder statesman, consider him “the Mod-grandfather.” He has stacked up piles of awards (he’d easily be in the Hall of Fame now if it was U.K.-based) and can also take some credit, or blame, for Britpop, too. Now about 20 years into his solo career, he has put out almost as many albums himself as the Jam and Style Council combined, all making their mark in the U.K. Top 10, while retaining more of a cult following here. Despite his recent rapprochement with Bruce Foxton, Weller is still his own man, as proud to serve up his jazzier solo material as his punkier and soulful sides live—”My Ever-Changing Moods,” indeed. And unlike one of his mod heroes, at least give him credit for not indulging in endless rock operas.
