As soon as Nigel Godrich jumped from behind his boards and spaz-danced with Thom Yorke in Atoms for Peace, we knew we were in a brave new world of producers crossing into performers—and it seems that Daniel Lanois has the chops to deliver on both fronts. U2's longtime collaborator (for The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, and more) and Dylan's Time Out of Mind mastermind (Bob snarked him out in Chronicles Vol. 1, but little matter) recently released the self-titled album of Black Dub, his reggae-laced rock debut. A bit of the Zombies creeps through on "Ring the Alarm" (surely more than Beyoncé gets in) and the purring guitars are Edge-friendly; the effect is accessible adult contemporary rock, and succinctly mixed (of course).
