MERRY MESS

Britpop of two minds

There is something supercute about London popper Kate Nash—when she lets herself indulge it, anyway. The younger, more auburn Lily Allen (as she is endlessly cited in the British press . . . and, clearly, the American kind) has a pretty great punk-girl howl and raucous rhythmics (see B-side “Model Behaviour”) but they’re often muted underneath kiss-offy, blunt odes of lesser effect (see the single to “Model,” the doe-eyed “Merry Happy”). Both sides of her coin are exhibited on this year’s sophomore disc, My Best Friend Is You (“you” being dichotomy, maybe?), and both sides are also better than other pop stars and their whipped-cream-shooting rude bits. With Peggy Sue (not Buddy’s).
