By choosing individualism above all else, trumpeter Smith has carved a unique spot for himself: a philosopher/bandleader with a constant yen for experimentation. He's a cagey soundscapist, whether leading a big band or playing duets (he's just dropped a sweet collab with the late drummer Ed Blackwell). Shards stack up in Smith's world; his abstractions are adroitly arranged. Speaking of duos, pianist Myers and drummer Nicholson have a rapport that's been honed for a quarter century. Let's hope Amina sings a bit, too.
