I SPY

The art of Google Street View

There’s nothing comforting about the Google Street View car with its cameras that photograph streets at random for the world to see. For instance, I can search my address and see a perfect photo of my landlady working in the front yard. Can you say c-r-e-e-p-y? For his new exhibition, iseeyou, artist Michael Wolf spent hours trolling the streets of Paris, New York, and elsewhere on Google. He photographed the onscreen gems and blew them up for us to see in detail: A couple shares a kiss on the street, a man on a scooter flips us the bird, an old woman with a cane is lying down on the sidewalk (or is she dead?). Be sure to take a close look because—who knows?—maybe you’ll see someone you know, like yourself.
