JJ Grey & Mofro

A regular on the Bonnaroo/Austin City Limits axis, Jacksonville area native JJ Grey's dead-eye blend of fanboat blues grease, guitar humidity, and grainy blue-eyed soul has sustained him and his revolving band for a decade. What once seemed yanked from beneath the mud--Grey's early records tore the Southern Rock aesthetic from the ground--has steadily found polish as his rep has grown. That's not bad. Both 2008's Orange Blossoms and Georgia Warhorse, his latest, access the best of what Grey's always done while operating on a higher level of production. Horns, strings, and guests appear and disappear, always anchored at the center by his inward goatee of a voice, all hairy and slick with soul. With Ryan Montbleau Band.
