White Nights

Dir. Luchino Visconti (1957). Visconti’s contribution to the post neo-realist fantasies of the 1950s was an adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s novella played out in an elaborate studio set (modeled after the Tuscan port city). An obvious model for Francis Coppola’s One From the Heart, White Nights also provided Marcello Mastroianni with his first starring role as a tragicomic lover.
