MOMA has shown us what it looks like to be locked inside a cage for a year and what it feels like to watch and be a part of a live performance by Fischerspooner for three hours (with no breaks)—now, we’re witnessing a piano recital from the inside out. Performance 9, part of the Performance Exhibition Series that focuses on historical and contemporary performance-based art, showcases the work of Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla in Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on ‘Ode to Joy’ for a Prepared Piano. The artists have carved a hole in the center of a grand piano; the performer then leans over the keyboard and will play Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (“Ode to Joy”) upside down and backward, while moving with the piano across the room. The result will be a concert unlike we’ve ever heard or seen before.
