Mostly Other People Do the Killing

They don't make a musical move without injecting it with sass, but the quartet's explosive improv is anything but frivolous (and only a smidge sarcastic). Much like the Art Ensemble of Chicago, they blend puckishness with profundity, and their expertise at both has been obvious for a couple of years. Forty Fort is yet another wiseacre triumph, but you really have to see 'em on stage to get the full hit--especially the depth of drummer Kevin Shea's swinging mania.
