Darlene Love is the original teen dream. She rose from Hawthorne, California, the same idyllic seaside town that the Beach Boys did, and they became some of her many collaborators in her ’60s r&b/pop heyday. While performing with girl group the Blossoms, the powerful young singer was discovered by “Wall of Sound” producer Phil Spector, and such hits as “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” ensued. She came to perform with Dionne Warwick, Sam Cooke, and Elvis Presley, who would recruit her for the triumphant TV special of his late-career comeback, 1968’s Elvis. Love’s career has proven durable over the decades, including stage/film accolades for playing herself in the Tony-nominated ’80s musical Leader of the Pack and acting in all four Lethal Weapon movies; she has lately revisited her gospel roots, a perfect vehicle for her rafter-bending topnotes, and was nominated this year for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Whew, that’s a lot of livin’.
