THE PURSUIT OF FUNNINESS

Maira Kalman’s elements of style

Editorial illustrator Maira Kalman gave us the funniest New Yorker cover we can remember, when she collaborated with Rick Meyerowitz on the now famous “New Yorkistan” map in 2001. They partitioned the city into Middle Eastern districts: Southern Brooklyn became Fuhgeddabouditstan, the Upper East Side became Blahniks, Long Island City became Taxistan, and Connecticut became Khakis. Kalman’s a humorist who can draw; her illustration of Strunk & White’s Elements of Stylegave the manual some much needed color, and her year of monthly opinion columns for The New York Times were poignant and hilarious takes on American democracy. Those 12 columns have been consolidated into one book, And the Pursuit of Happiness, which she will discuss tonight in a multimedia presentation.
