There are a few constants of the New York String Orchestra: It is one of the most prestigious amateur ensembles in the United States, and it has been led by conductor Jaime Laredo for almost two decades. Other than that, the orchestra is proving surprisingly fluid with their ideas and energy: Their annual Christmas Eve concert was once devoted solely to Mozart, but this year includes Vaughan Williams’s emotive Fantasia, Beethoven’s chasmal Fifth Symphony, and Brahms’s tempestuous First Piano Concerto (the latter featuring soloist Benjamin Hochman). For these young musicians (ages 15 to 22), tonight is a festive evocative education—and for the rest of us, it is simply a treat.
